Overview

Barack Obama, then an Illinois senator, perseveres in a downpour at a presidential campaign rally at Widener University in Chester, Pa., on Oct. 28, 2008. This photo was taken by Damon Winter, who would later be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography in 2009 for his coverage of Barack Obama's historic campaign for the presidency.

Damon Winter recalled how he took the memorable photograph: "With only three days left until the election, I almost didn't make it to the event in Pennsylvania. Our media van was delayed and Sen. Barack Obama's motorcade left without us. We fought traffic for several hours and finally made it to the event seconds before Obama took stage. I found the one and only place that I could make this picture, but it meant that for a few minutes I had to stand in front of a woman who had waited in the rain for hours for her front row position. I said, 'If you let me stand here for a few minutes, hundreds of thousands of people will get to see what you are seeing.' Thankfully, she was a Times reader and she didn't mind."
